Introduction

What are green certificates in Brussels?

Unlike Flanders and Wallonia, Brussels continues to actively support the installation of solar panels through the green certificate system. This mechanism rewards the production of renewable energy. For every 1,000 kWh produced, you receive a certain number of green certificates, redeemable for cash.

In 2025, a well-oriented photovoltaic system can receive an average of :

  • 2 to 3 green certificates per MWh produced (depending on your system’s efficiency and installed capacity).
  • A guaranteed redemption value set by Sibelga: around €65 to €90 per certificate, depending on the market.

In Brussels, there is no longer any direct subsidy for the purchase of solar panels. However, green certificates are still in place and more than compensate for this lack of subsidy. Thanks to this mechanism, the return on investment for a photovoltaic installation is often less than 7 years.
In addition, you continue to benefit from the reduced VAT rate of 6% if your home is more than 10 years old.
Finally, a properly sized installation can save you up to 60% on your electricity bill. All good reasons to invest in solar energy in Brussels now.

  1. Installation must be carried out by an approved installer (RESCert certified).
  2. The system must be connected to the network and inspected by an approved body.
  3. You must register your installation with Brugel, the Brussels regulator.
  1. Green certificates are still a hot topic in Brussels.
  2. Electricity prices continue to rise.
  3. The cost of solar panels is historically low.
  4. Self-consumption is becoming increasingly profitable thanks to batteries.
